Hi everyone,

I am not sure how to enable the following setup for shipping costs. I need to include 3 different variables.

- Within Europe or Rest of the world (i do not mind giving the customer the option to choose and I can validate it when the order is placed - if this makes it easier)

- By item (e.g. Shoes, Skirts etc)

- By each additional item.

To give you an example

Shoes to Europe: 1st pair $20 and each additional pair = $10

Shoes to Rest of World: 1st pair $30 and each additional pair = $10

Skirts to Europe: 1st one $15 and each additional skirt= $5

Skirts to Rest of World: 1st one $25 and each additional skirt= $5

etc

What is the best way to achieve this?

Thanks!

You are making it too hard on yourself. Stop trying to make money on the shipping. If you want to put a handling fee in that is fine, but put product costs as part of the product and then use calculated shipping based on weight for everything else.

There is a per item option as you may have seen in oscommerce but that will not be able to do what you want

Thanks for the reply but it is not accurate. I am not making any money on shipping. It is the exact opposite I am trying to do. The suppliers charge a fixed amount for the first item and then a smalller amount for each item thereafter. If I use weight I will overcharge my customers.

Also my suppliers courier provider has 2-zone rates. Europe and rest of the world. This is why I want to achieve this. I can see that i do not necessarily need a separate formula by product as I can use different weights to differentiate. However,

- How can I apply 2 different charges (Europe, Rest of world)

- How can I apply different charge for any extra item they buy?

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks!

John it makes perfect sense and in fact many shopping carts are set up to do exactly that. I am trying OS Commerce for the first time and was also hoping that there would be a way to set up shipping zones and rate classes, including the $X for the first and $Y for each additional item logic.

It may be possible to do it with weight by saying that if your product weighs one pound the first pound costs $X, up to two pounds is $Y, etc. Then if you have a heavier product mark it as 5 pounds and set the weight scale to that up to 5 pounds covers your cost for 5 small items or one large item, between 5 and 10 pounds covers the cost of 2 large items or 1 larger item plus up to 5 additional small items, etc. It's a little bit clunky but it will work.

That does not address the idea of different costs to different shipping zones but it does address how to make it so that additional items don't cost as much as the first item. The weight that you assign to each product does not have to be accurate. It only needs to correspond to the amount being charged.
