automatically update order status?

I have setup a download store, but when shoppers pay, they are redirected to paypal, but not automatically back to the site, they must click return to merchant, which takes them to checkout_success.php and says

 

NOTE: Downloads are not available until payment has been confirmed

 

I then need to edit the order and change it from 'pending' to 'download now available'

 

There is also this : PayPal IPN Invalid [Completed]

 

If i change the order status the download becomes available.

 

What am i doing wrong? after paypal it should redirect the user back to the site and download should become available.
