osC scaling model & examples?

Hi,

 

I'm using osCommerce as an example app in some development work which will be gaining a great deal of exposure and possibly scrutiny. I need to have a rock-solid story ready as to how osCommerce scales up to handle high demand - I'm assuming that it's standard practice to have [Load Balancer - osCommerce - DB] and throw in extra mid-tier (osCommerce) to handle higher load. I've looked over the osCommerce site and I can't find any documentation - is there any material that confirms this and perhaps gives indications of dimensions, throughput rates and examples?

 

Documentation relating to osCommerce would be ideal but it would be good to show that this is typical of similar LAMP apps.
