I installed one about 4 years ago, I know it had the options of allowing you to set what the coupon code was valid for and the minimum order amount. So you could have the coupon only apply to 1 product, or all products in 1 category and the order had to be atleast $X.XX amount for the coupon to work. Did you check to see if the coupon needed any of those options set? Also I noticed that the one I installed wasn't compatible with shops that used product attributes.
