Hi.

I use wamp for tetsing but our hosts are now uisng Suphp and Suhosin which does not go with wamp.

I need to set up a Linux box for the office but need the easiest for a non Linux dude that comes with phpmyadmin, apache,php5.2 and 5.3 using a panel like cpanel. Something that one does not have to use command lines.

Thanks

If you want to have an environment just like you have on your real web host, have you considered installing your test version into a subdirectory on your site? Something like /storedev? As long as there are no links anywhere to this directory, search engines and hackers shouldn't find it. You can also password protect it to keep others out. The only real downsides are

1) a bit more cumbersome to edit and upload file changes, compared to a desktop PC

2) if you badly miscode something and get an endless loop, your account might get suspended by your host, which could knock out your live store

The big upside is that it's exactly the same environment as your production store, so there's no worry that you'll code something that doesn't work on the live store.

Thanks guys..

Thing is with the subdirectory is that at the moment host is on php5.2.11 and I need to test for 5.3 with Suphp and Suhosin.

The later two are okay as they are also on 5.2 however the 5.3 update really does some funky things and I want to be sure all my clients' stores are okay when they flick the switch to 5.3.

Since my post I have found a few options for a Linux desktop and I guess I will weigh up which to try. At the moment looking at Mepis with Xampp, however as imop suggested, Ubuntu seems to be the most popular. Version 10.04LTS is birthed on April 29 so might also look at this with webmin although from what i hae read webmin is not as easy to use as Xampp altho' I could be wrong.

At my age, I'm not about to go into the os command line learning (started in 1976 with cp/m then dos)so just need a good easy going interface for the web serving part of it.

Many thanks again.
