spooks
If anyone is rushing to finish to fly in or out of the UK today (15/04), don't bother, all flights are cancelled A volcanic eruption in iceland has created a ash cload over the UK & northern europe, flights are banned till the cload has moved away. burt
Yes, my flight to Munich has been cancelled :-\ Not good, as this is the end of a rather large project that needs me there in order to do some training and set the site live.

MrPhil
I don't understand why Europeans whine so much about canceled intra-Europe flights. Unlike the US, you have excellent high speed train service all over the continent, and good highways too. With the exception of a few places (Ireland, Malta, Crete, Cyprus, various smaller offshore islands) you can reach them without flying or a boat trip. People have just gotten spoiled by the ability to fly anywhere at short notice. Granted, the trains/boats/highways will have more people on them, while air travel is/was shut down, and for intercontinental travel you really don't have a choice. Contrast this with the US (a much bigger place), where train service is a joke and flying is the only choice for distances over 500km or so. To go from New York to Los Angeles by train is at least three days of travel! Just wait until the Yellowstone supervolcano blows up and smothers most of the US under a metre of ash! And if not that one, the Long Valley caldera.

Yes, but for international train trips you have to make a reservation and the capacity of the trains was very quickly exhausted when all these people wanted to get on. And if you wanted to hire a car to travel to your destination you were charged a fortune because the rental company has to arrange for the car to come back which cross-border in Europe is not too common. When I took the ferry from Calais to Dover for the last osC meeting in London we were with 4 people by foot. The rest was using a car or came with a bus (there were more UK customs and border people than passengers to check). The French company that sails from Dover didn't even take foot passengers any more.... With the airspace closed the ferries didn't have enough capacity for all the foot passengers wanting to cross...
