tax problem

i've watched the oscommerce tutorial over and over and have followed exactly, but cannot get checkout to add tax. i have paypal and have it on sandbox (test mode). any suggestions what i might be doing wrong or what might fix it?

Well its kind of hard not knowing your situation. Whether you are in the US, what state, your states tax laws, etc.

 

Assuming you are in the US, in a state that collects sales tax for your home state, and not for any other state...

 

In Localization/Taxes create one tax zone for your state, and one for the rest of the 49 states.

Make sure you have at least one Taxable Class of products in Tax Classes

And set the tax rate of 0% for the 49 states, and a tax rate equal to your state sales tax for your home state.

 

Make sure your products that are taxable have that selected in the products edit.

 

Make sure you set to display prices without tax in Configuration-My Store.

 

You should see the tax calculation in the shopping cart contents long before you have to deal with a payment module.
