Accepting credit card payment

Ok, OS commerce up and running.

just wondered how I go about accepting credit card payments? I have set up the module and it appears to work, but I am sure I need to set up some sort of 3rd party processing or something to move the money from the purchaser's account into mine. who actually processes the credit cards? What do I need to do?

thanks!

First thing is to remove the cc module. It is not for production use and clearly says so. It is insecure and does not comply with PCI standards. It is for testing only.

Then go out and find you a real credit card merchant company. One that has a prebuilt and configured module that will drop into osCommerce without a lot of headaches.

If you're just beginning at this, I would recommend a third party payment service such as PayPal (or others) that handles all the customer credit card data on their site. The alternative is a "merchant account" with your bank, and a "payment gateway" to handle submission of credit card data. The problem with that choice is your site is taking in and handling credit card numbers, etc., and is subject to a large number of security requirements that can be very expensive and difficult to reach. They have a lower per-transaction fee than PayPal, but do have a monthly fixed base fee. You usually have to get pretty large before the lower per-transaction fee outweighs the fixed fees and cost of security attainment.

I wouldn't use Paypal if they paid me to use it. I see too many people on this forum that claims they do not get reports of sales because the buyer never returns the the site to complete the transaction.

Do a search for Merchant companies, then for each one browse their support area for Shopping Cart integration. Many of them offer the modules and THAT is the companies I would use.

At the risk of endorsing any of them, I use USA ePay in several shops which provided the module, so I knew it would work. I'm sure there are many others. You just have to search for them. (BTW, USA ePay does direct customers to their site to complete the transaction, and the customer is always directed back to my shop automatically for positive transaction completion.)

Mark,

USA ePay sounds exactly like PayPal in the way they handle payments. If PayPal is set up properly, there is no problem with customers not returning to the osc site.

Looks like my business bank has services to handle this application.

They say they can make it happen for me.

It sounds like they want to set up a "merchant account" for you. Just remember that there will be lots of security hoops to jump through because you will be directly handling customer credit card numbers, not some third party like PayPal. Just be aware of that, and cost out a merchant account versus third-party.

Many credit card companies are using that method, long before Paypal ever used it. I used Verisign back in the '90s and that was the preferred method even then. The difference is, I have NEVER had a problem with receiving money and not being properly notified of the sale.

Thanks for the input.

Now, If I can get the USPS shipping module to work.

The USPS shipping module is simple. Get it installed, then go register at the site found on the module interface in your administration pages. Then once you receive your username and password immediately tell them that you are ready to be switched over to the production server AND that you are using osCommerce. Once you receive confirmation that you are switched to the production server its just a matter of configuration. be sure you have your store address filled out and the Shipping Post Code is filled out in the administration->Shipping/Packaging area.
