suexec phpexec

I have a site that I'm about to put into production. This is being hosted on our own Ubuntu 9.10 Linux server. I'm concerned about possible security issues related to the 777 permissions required on some directories.

I have learned that the mechanism used to combat this is suexec or phpexec. I'm confused about the process for installing either of these. I have read that suexec does not work with php, this leaves me a bit confused espcially after reading that I should add this.

What say you?

Dale,

You should NOT have any directories with 777 permissions !

Directories 755

Most files 644

Configure.php files 444

That's a nice sentiment, but in reality osCommerce requires write access to certain directories -- and depending upon your hosting situation, the only way to do that may be to give xx7 access. So your response is not helpful. Perhaps you could respond to the original question about suexec and phpexec?
