Blocking Entire Continents

Hi,

IP Trap has recently blocked access attempts by various IPs in India, Thailand, Africa etc.

There are sites on the net THIS as an example that list IP Ranges for countries and continents, and even give htaccess blocks for them.

Now my site aims to sell to UK, France and Ireland - so would there be any harm in me blocking all of Asia, Africa etc from accessing my site? (obviously need to keep US due to google etc)

Also would IP deny in Cpanel be best or by using the htaccess files?

Thanks

Does IP blocking really work longterm? Can't they get around that with IP cloaking? How does this much blocking affect server load? Just interested.

IP blocker in cpanel writes to your htaccess as far as I know.

I'm feeling lucky today......maybe someone will answer my post!

I do try and answer a simple post when I can just to give something back.

I block everything EXCEPT the US. Works fine with no real apparent reduction in performance.

and no, there really is no way to ensure that IP blocking will keep them all out. Just the ones that give up on the first try.

I have a client who only Wanted Canada to be allowed to the site. So, I Allowed only Canadian IPS EXCLUDING Proxies. So, only valid Canadian IP's and no proxy servers (even in Canada) are allowed.

IF someone from outside of Canada or a Proxy Server tried to enter the site, it gives them a screen notifying them of the terms of use for the site.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the info, now modified my Htaccess to block everyone from countries that I do not sell to.

I had to leave the US & Canada as allowed access as I dont want to inadvertantly block any of the "good" spiders.

Not the only solution to a secure site I agree, but every little bit has got to help.

Thanks Again

Is there any disadvantage to blocking proxy servers? I'm looking at using blockacountry.com, but I'm wondering if there any legitimate uses for anonymous proxy servers. Might I accidentally block some legitimate customers if I do this? Or are proxy servers used mainly by more sophisticated scammers?
