kerrywatson
I have a client who has almost decided to go with OS Commerce, but has asked about serving it from his Mac OSX server. Is this possible? Is this a smart thing to do? Is there any benefit that you can see? Any drawbacks? Would it be wiser to serve it from his ISP's secure server, and let him maintain it from his Mac in a web-based window? Thanks so much, Kerry Watson OS Commerce novice but eager to get into it
Guest
Would it be wiser to serve it from his ISP's secure server, and let him maintain it from his Mac in a web-based window? If he is accepting payment over the web the SSL would be the smarter way to go.
kerrywatson
He plans to manually process credit card orders at first, though I believe he will quickly tire of that. Kerry
Guest
Even so....unless he is NOT gathering the CC number online hr needs the SSL. I don't put my CC number on a shopping site without it.
Justin
SSL can be made available in either situation. If he utilizes his ISP's SSL certificate, customers will see the ISP's domain name when creating an account and when checking out. Because this looks unprofessional, many people choose to obtain their own SSL certificates. With one's own SSL certificate, it is then possible to offer secure connections to customers within one's own domain. This is true whether your client chooses to host the OSC site on his Mac OS X server or via an external hosted server. Hope this helps, Kerry! rthrash
I don't think there are any problems running OSC on Mac OS X . I'd make sure you're using 10.2.4, though. You can get a great PHP distribution for OS X from here. I've always had good luck with all of Marc's (the guy that builds the PHP distribution) stuff at Entropy. MySQL just needs to be turned on and configured, I think. You can find more info about it at Marc's site above, as well. Ryan Thrash
Justin
I've been running OSC on every point release of Mac OS X since 10.2, and it has always worked flawlessly. I haven't tried it on 10.2.4 yet, but there's no reason to expect it perform any differently than previous point releases. I agree that Mssr. Liyanage's PHP and MySQL distributions are terrific. He has done all Mac OS X users a tremendous service.
