jamesey
Hi, I've bought an osCommerce store template design.. I won't say where from, because im probably not allowed ;) , but it comes in a download which you would then upload and install as a new osCommerce shop. As I've already got an osCommerce store, I wondered how to get this new store desgin to replace my existing one. Is it as simple as just uploading it all to my server, replacing all the exisiting files? But if this is how to do it, surely there are files I wouldn't want to be replaced?? Any help would be great. Thanks, James
Guest
James, Templates do not typically follow standard OSC Structure.......therefore you may have to start from the beginning, adding any contributions you want and configuring the store the way you want it. If the existing store, and the new template are the same versions, you may be able to export the database, then import it into the new template one all the contributions are installed again. However, like I said........template creators do things differently so this may be a challenging process. Chris
multimixer
First thing I would do is to ask the one who sold me the template. As Chris said, Templates do not typically follow standard OSC Structure, some of them do, some a little, some not at all etc Impossible to know what you bought and how compatible it is with the store you already have, that is also altered and maybe also based on another template My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel

jamesey
I've been thinking aobout this for a bit now.. i have a company who will chaarge about $600 to implemant a template to an exisiting shop.. but i just think this is way too expensive, seeing as the oscommerce store i have is the default store. The only thing modifed with my store are a few files in the /admin where a contribution has been added. Surely i can do this myself? If im just putting in a new template in my store, i surely wouldn't even need to over-write any of the admin files anyway?? Surely everything else I would just over-right? Apart from: /includes/configure.php and leave everything in the admin folder, including admin/configure.php These are the only 2 things i can think off to leave alone, as the configure files link to my exisiting database and settings which i would want to keep. Can anyone assist any further? Or is it too much guessing and a gamble to try this?
♥mdtaylorlrim
My guess is, and this is what reasonably should happen... Install a new shop. Install the template. Configure to work. Install add-ons. If done in this order most anyone can do it. To apply a template to an existing shop require many, many tedious hours of trial and error. MOST OF THE TIME. Depending on the skills of the template author. I would likely charge you much more than $600 to alter an existing shop with a template. Make a complete backup of your old shop.... 2. Add up the new templete shop overwriting your existing "default" oscommerce shop. (Except these 2 files includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php) Thats it and it should work.... and if not , just uplaod the backup you made in step 1 , and you have your old shop back again. If im just putting in a new template in my store, i surely wouldn't even need to over-write any of the admin files anyway?? As mentioned before there are many many different templates out there. As well as companies who modify the oscommerce model to allow easier template designs, which start using new functions and variables to achieve the same thing. Just in a different way. If you have not yet done alot of mods to your store and REALLY want a template then as suggested before me, start a installation, install the template and do the mods as you see fit. I wouldn't chance it personally. Again if you really want a template, start a new store on your sever.. call it www.yourstore.com/test instead of www.yourstore.com/catalog and then install the template and see how it works. You can then examine the database and directory differences, and import over what you have in your existing store. As mentioned before, it could be a few hours of work or a few days of work depending on what is different. Since the person you asked about the implementation has more insight into the template and what would be envolved $600 isn't un-reasonable. I've seen hourly rates as high as $75 per hour of work. Oscommerce is fairly easy to use but has alot of stuff under the hood when you start making changes that isn't always apparent up front. Its very easy to under quote a custom job.
