Process Credit Card When Ship?

I have a website redesign client who has an outdated handmade ecommerce solution that prints the credit card number on the invoice then they manually remove the credit card from the server. I realize that their current process is a MAJOR security risk, and I'm doing my best to convince them that any other process is better than this.

 

I'd like to be able to offer them a service like Amazon does. In other words, they would be able to process a customer's credit card when the order is SHIPPED (NOT when placed) due to the fact that they sometimes have to wait for the stock to arrive and don't want to charge the client until absolutely necessary.

 

Is there such an independent module? If not, can a currently installed module be adjusted to fit this requirement?

Just about all major processors support this (Authorize.net and PayPal that I know for certain). It's called Authorization and Capture where you set your payment module to "Authorize" where it reserves the money on the customer's card, then when you actually ship the order you then manually capture the funds. Typically an authorization will hold the funds for up to 30 days before being released.

 

The only osCommerce payment module that I know if that allows you to capture funds from the store's admin instead of the payment processor's website is my PayPal Pro module, but I'm sure there are others.
