JoshSterling Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Hello, I'm not able to find a way to easily resolve the pixelated images that display when using Fire Fox 3.5.7. The images are full size at 500x500 and re-sized in the admin to 150x150. The images display fine at both resolutions in IE, Safari and Chrome. Take a look for you're self...http://mydogscool.com Is this a common problem? Does anyone have a solution they care to offer? Thanks Josh Josh
Guest Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Try one of thumbnail contributions in the addons.
JoshSterling Posted January 11, 2010 Author Posted January 11, 2010 Try one of thumbnail contributions in the addons. Thanks. Unless I can figure out why this pixelated image problem is unique to FireFox, then I may do just that. Is there something OSC does different when FF browser is used? IE,Safari and Chrome are fine. Josh
MrPhil Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Are you talking about the full sized image when you click on "click to enlarge"? I'm on Firefox 3.5.7 and the big picture shows up nice and clear. If nothing else, try clearing your browser cache (Firefox) and try again. Maybe you have some old images cached in there.

Hey There MrPhil. Na, the small image is pixelated - full size looks fine. Have cleared the cache, no difference.FYI...in the admin/Images/Small Image Width & Height are set to 150x150. This is the size I want to display until clicked on for the 500x500 view. Calculate Image size is True. I can change these setting and the image size will display accordingly but still pixelated. Again... these display fine in IE,Chrome and Safari not FireFox. Im grasping at straws here but would you or anyone else think that line 30 in popup_image.php has anything to do with the image resize problem? Thanks for any advice on this topic. Josh
MrPhil Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Ah, I see that the thumbnail image is 500x500 scaled down to 150x150. That's generally going to produce poor quality when you have a very detailed fine pattern (I guess that's what you mean by "pixelated"). Perhaps Firefox chose to trade off fast scaling (for fast display) for a lower quality algorithm. Frankly, I can't see much difference in display quality between FF3.5 and IE6. If anything, the IE image looks a bit more "speckley" and pixelated than the FF image. Do you see that much difference in the two? The Thumbnail add-on might be useful if it lets you provide two separate images -- a 150x150 and a 500x500, so you can get the best quality on both. Im grasping at straws here but would you or anyone else think that line 30 in popup_image.php has anything to do with the image resize problem? Is that the line in the Javascript resize function that makes the window 30 pixels wider and 60 pixels taller than the image? I think that's just to provide some space for borders and menu/title bar, so I don't think that's going to affect the scaling. P.S. "leashes strength" --> "leash's strength"

"leashes strength" --> "leash's strength" Yes..."pixelated", Not sure if Merriam-Webster would approve. :-)I failed to review my site with IE6 or any older browser. I'm using IE8,Safari 4.04, Chrome 3.01 and FF 3.6. With the exception of FF the images are sharp/clear at both the min and max resolution. I'll take bktrain's advice and try a thumbnail add-on. Seems a bit odd that there are not more post like this. This can't be unique to my set up? Are you able to view my site with a browser other than IE? At this point I'm Looking for a little validation that the images are not "speckley" if viewed using the same browser versions as I. I do appreciate your time and help. P.S The whole apostrophe s thing was killing me. Spelled as is gets a higher seo ranking with google and I need all the help I can get.:-) Josh
MrPhil Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Well, I don't know what to suggest. As I said, under IE6 and FF3.5.7 the thumbnails both appeared equally sharp (maybe the FF was a tad better). If you're seeing a noticeably worse image under FF, it's got to be something peculiar to your setup. Be sure to check if you have any "zoom factor" enabled on the browser (View > Zoom) -- if the image was scaled down to 150x150, and then magnified (zoomed) by 5 or 10%, that could make the image quality really crappy and blocky (pixelated). The whole apostrophe s thing was killing me. Spelled as is gets a higher seo ranking with google Really? It's a dark day indeed when Google starts penalizing you for spelling correctly! Or was it because you didn't have "leashes" on that page?

After my previous reply to you I installed Ultra Pics 2.07 http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1642/v,22. This has allowed me to use the correct sized images and has resolved my image problem. All displays as it should. The install left me with a few other issues that I need to come back and fix. Thanks for the quick reply's. I don't see that on some of the other forums. I have several other post to make so expect to see me around a bit more. Josh
