Who do these hosting companies think they are !?

Ok,

A little vent here.

I have been contacted quite a bit lately about Hosting providers (None of Our Corporate Sponsors I don't think) that have been paid for Hosting but don't give the customer access to cpanel or FTP.

However, they have an auto installer for 'their' version of OSC, which is typically an outdated version full of security problems and NOT configured the way the customer wants.

So, I have people contacting me asking me to update their sites. Adding payment modules, shipping options and other contributions, nothing too difficult. However, I can't even do those simple things because their host won't allow them access to the cpanel or ftp for 'security reasons' ? What the heck kind of crap is that ?!

My suggestion to them............CHANGE HOSTS ! What more can I tell them ?!...

Anyway, that is my vent. Thanks for reading.

No doubt they have unlimited bandwidth for £10-£20 a year and the site will fall over because of the other 10,000 people using the system.

You cant get away from it I am afraid.

Getting better with mods but no programmer am I.

Seems to me that hosts have just woken up and realised that hosting is NOT an easy business to be in and the fact of the matter is that cPanel has made it too easy for anyone to become a host! The amount of hosts who know nothing is -staggering-.

Well,

Honestly, I guess it comes back to the old adage, BUYER BEWARE !

I know my reseller account costs me 159.00 /yr, which includes customer access cpanel and ftp access, this costs me 13.25/mth......I resell, to clients who have me do their website for 15.00/mth..........without a website, 25./mth. But some of the potential clients contacting me are paying 30-50/mth for hosting, and they don't have cpanel or ftp access !!! This shocks me !

Again, I guess it is buyer beware.

Majority of hostings nowadays don't care about customers (this is a reason they oversell the resources like unlimited amount of space and bandwidth) as they care about to fill their pockets with some cash.

I did joke over one company as they do sells unlimited hosting account, I simply asked for whole datacenter with unlimited amount servers for $5 per moth as I wish to do the same project as google, the live chat operator was completely pissed off, as he couldn't answer the questions about unlimited servers for $5 per moth.

8 people out of 10 don't bother to read installation manuals. I can recommend: if you can't read the installation manual, don't bother to install any contribution yourself.

Before installing contribution or editing/updating/deleting any files, do the full backup, it will save to you & everyone here on the forum time to fix your issues.

How true! It's all a big scam to lead on customers into buying an account, only to find out there's something that effectively limits you. Usually it comes down to "excessive CPU usage" or something like that not mentioned in the ads. A host can also restrict what kind of files you store on your account ("must be directly related to the function of the site -- no archives or backups of your PC") and how much email traffic ("300 emails per hour"). The frustrating thing is that while packing in neophyte customers who need lots of support, the hosting companies are cutting back on their support staff.

I don't know if the trade authorities (FTC, etc.) will do anything about it, because it seems to be a uniform industry-wide practice. Yes, it's deceptive advertising, but if everyone does it, it may be considered "common knowledge" and not serious enough to prosecute. Re: hard disk sizes given in "small" megabytes (10^6, not 2^20) and diagonal display screen sizes measured to include the blank overscan area.
