Cannot modify the contents of a textarea field in table

I am just installing OSCommerce. For each category, I want to add a descriptive text, instead of the 'Let's see what we have here'. To do this, I added a new field, categories_introduction, to the categories_description table. I have made modifications to oscommerce.sql (the table is successfully created with the new field), to categories.php (the textarea field appears in the forms to add a new category and to edit an existing category).

 

The poblem is that modifications to the textarea field in the forms are not applied to the database. If I updated the database directly, contents of the textarea field are available in the forms (new category, and edit category). :?
