♥FWR Media Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Are we able to know the IP address of regested customers? and are we able to block certain IP which we choose? Thanks. Yes but the majority of people are on dynamic IP addresses which makes it all but worthless. The answer is yes to both, but the reason why you want to ban an ip and for how long make all the difference in how you go about doing it. Why? sure I understand the "how long" because you can ban a user for the lifetime of their existing internet connection IP but what's the point in that? ♥mdtaylorlrim Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Why? sure I understand the "how long" because you can ban a user for the lifetime of their existing internet connection IP but what's the point in that? Because in today's world of high speed internet a hacker can send multiple attempts to hack a server in just seconds. Most of the attempts are known methods and while we employ methods to prevent such attacks once a new method becomes known it is due to a successful attack against someone, and it takes time to get the word out and get systems patched. Therefore if we can ban a hacker on his first attempt to break into a system then the threat from this person is removed temporarily. Most of the time it is enough to make them want to move on rather than to obtain a new ip address to continue the hack attempt only to have to do it again after each attempt. Again, it is a matter what the op goal is. Me? My goal is to not allow any ip from the Asia/Pacific area so I have taken steps to block them. Only through a proxy can they get to me. Then other methods are used to restrict their activity. Community Bootstrap Edition, Edge Avoid the most asked question. See How to Secure My Site and How do I...?

midpen Posted January 6, 2010 Author Posted January 6, 2010 I found bunch of people are playing around in my site, I saw bunch of fake users and emails (you can easily tell they are fake). How to know the IPs and block them? I know anything is 100% safe. just find a little way to prevent.

There are many ways .. if you have cPanel you can install CSF (Configserver Security and Firewall) it's free and extremely capable .. see a bad IP .. block it! It does a whole lot more than that but to answer the question. midpen Posted January 7, 2010 Author Posted January 7, 2010 Emails? Are you sure you have not already been compromised? In the admin section there is a Who's onlnine? If you see them there the ip address is plainly visible. Can you find your server logs? when they are offline, I can not see IP anymore. It is impossibe I track them online all day long. I mean their register emails are abviously fake, like [email protected], and addresss: 123 Ave, etc. So far there is no harm to my store. I know I can not avoid this 100%, But at least I need to have ability to block those fake customers IP address. I don't know if it is easy to do it?
knifeman Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 A lot of people will use fake info to register. Not because they are hackers, but they do not want to give out their personal info. I assume they think they can see something after registration that they did not see without an account. My sites have shipping rates explained quite plainly, but people still register, go through checkout and quit before completion. All while using fake e-mails and street addresses. knifeman Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 As mentioned earlier, most people do not have a static IP on their home computer. If you start blocking IPs from your own country, then you will eventually block legitimate customers. Fake registrations are like spam. just delete them and go on. I doubt you can stop every single one. Tim I understand that. But anyway, they are abviously not real buyers.
