So_Not_an_HTML_genius Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Hi, As of the last month, we have been unable to use Firefox when checking out with our store. It does not allow the customers to input any information in the text boxes such as credit card numbers etc. I was told that there are patches that most php software has that have commands that go with each browser. Does anyone know about this or about what would have happened with Firefox? I would appreciate the help. Sincerely, Kelly

Sincerely, Kelly I've heard about a lot of problems with the latest version of FF, and I haven't switched yet (still running 3.0). And I haven't upgraded to IE8 yet either (for about the same reasons, although everyone I know that has IE8 doen't have any problems so that argument doesn't seem to hold water  ) If you PM your URL to me I'd be happy to see what it does using IE7 and the "old" version of FF. :) If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. ♥mdtaylorlrim Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 That's interesting because I just did a test transaction in my store using FF 3.5.6 and all was well. Community Bootstrap Edition, Edge Avoid the most asked question. See How to Secure My Site and How do I...?
Guest Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I also tested my clients stores ( 9 in total) to ensure they work with FF 3.5.6 after I heard about the 'bug'. I tested no problems. Chris
♥mdtaylorlrim Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 On the other hand my CSS menus quit working in IE8. Not sure if it is IE or something else at this point. Community Bootstrap Edition, Edge Avoid the most asked question. See How to Secure My Site and How do I...?

Guest Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I can't speak for IE, I deleted it from every computer I own !!! :D Microsoft Updates hates me and keeps tormenting me to install it, but I just ignore it. Bill is persistent though. Chris
germ Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I get the same routine about IE8. I just tell it to talk to the hand ('cause the face ain't listening)! If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. ♥mdtaylorlrim Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I tried a few solutions and ended up using my last choice of inserting <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=8"> into the <head> section of each necessary page... darn it, I was trying to use something I could put in only one file, but no luck yet. So_Not_an_HTML_genius Posted January 6, 2010 Author Posted January 6, 2010 That's interesting because I just did a test transaction in my store using FF 3.5.6 and all was well. Which version of oscommerce do you have? I wish it were as easy as not upgrading to a newer browser but I cannot control the populace to not upgrade and they are the customers trying to use the store and leaving. I was hoping that someone already discovered this issue and created a patch. Any idea as to a patch that can be added that helps your site to work with each browser? Thanks, Kelly

Thanks, Kelly I've seen little javascript snippetts that did various things when accessed by different browsers, but none that would fit in the realm of your problem (that I can remember). I helped someone once whose input boxes didn't allow input to be typed in in FF ("old version"), but it had something to do with the infamous (and just as useless) "no right click" script they had on the page. When they removed that it all worked. Without your URL, I can't posit a solution. I can't help fix what I can't see... :'( If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. Well, without even seeing the URL, which I didn't get a chance to send you...you nailed exactly what has happened. I did install the infamous No Right Click script. So, sadly I will have to remove it. Believe it or not, I know lots of savvy computer users can get past the "no right click" but we have an art intensive sight. As it is people complain because we have watermark copyright in the image but the average user looking for images won't bother trying to get around the no right click. I cannot tell you how many people grab our images. They will ruin an image to crop out the watermark. We have found our art on e-bay in CDs with screen savers of art, cross stitch that is created with a computer program, you name it. So, now that I realize by trying to save us from getting ripped off we probably lost lots of money by people not being able to purchase from the store. I guess that will lead to a whole new question and new problem ... how can I keep people from copying and saving our images from the store?? Thanks again, Kelly

germ Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I have heard of image protection software (not free) but haven't used it, and I don't know anyone who has, so I can't say if it's worth what it costs or not. I feel for you but have no viable solutions to offer (since you said watermarking didn't help much). :( Maybe you need "bigger and badder" watermarks so the image becomes absolutely worthless if it's covered up... You can't. Remember that everything is downloaded to the users computer prior to rendering in their browser. Code and images. All they have to do is look at the cache for the images. There are probably a dozen was to discourage image theft, but only a couple work with osc. I like the transparent image over the top of the real image. Right click, save, leave site. Look at pic later to find a blank page... Community Bootstrap Edition, Edge Avoid the most asked question. See How to Secure My Site and How do I...?
♥mdtaylorlrim Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Maybe you need "bigger and badder" watermarks so the image becomes absolutely worthless if it's covered up... Right. Watermarks can be huge, covering the entire image, but with a transparent factor of about 3%. Community Bootstrap Edition, Edge Avoid the most asked question. I would love to do something like that. BTW, Thank you again for the information. I took off the right click script and low and behold the checkout works perfectly. (not even gonna think about what that meant for the Christmas shoppers I lost...) Kelly
♥mdtaylorlrim Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 How do you create a transparent image as you said here. I would love to do something like that. Not really my thing, but modern graphics programs have a feature to create a transparent gif image. Create an image with a white background, the in the feature tell it to make the white background transparent. Surely you have seen images where you see the background of a web page around the contours of the subject in the image, and not a subject on a white 'canvas?' That is a transparent background image. I would imagine that you could create one image like that, and create the code in osc to put the image over the top of your product image each time. Varying image size would be a hurdle to deal with. Google 'protecting images' will likely give you a few sites that describe it. Community Bootstrap Edition, Edge Avoid the most asked question. See How to Secure My Site and How do I...?
Guest Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 This is a working contribution as well for watermarks http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1839 Chris
