I am with a web hosting company that i'm using shared hosting and it offers cpanel. I am looking at switching to their VPS hosting since it seems to be a good step between shared and dedicated hosting. The only problem is they don't offer cpanel and only offer Virtuozoo. I don't know anything about this. is this a good option to use instead of cpanel or should I stick only with cpanel for hosting?

Parallels Virtuozzo isn't a panel it is virtualization software and, set up correctly, is an excellent system for offering VPS server solutions.

cPanel can be run on the VPS just like it can be run on a dedicated server so I'm not understanding the problem.

I'm currently hosting with HostGator which I like. I have a shared plan which offers cPanel. I want to upgrade to one of their VPS plans. They have several plans and their plans for $19.95 and $29.95 only offer Virtuozoo. They have plans up to $99.99 or something like that. Starting with their $39.95 plan all of these higher plans come with Virtuozoo but if you pay $10 you get cpanel and this is $10 per month. Also, you have to have their $39.95 plan or higher. I had never heard of Virtuozoo so this confused me. Is cpanel something i need or am I okay with Virtuozoo?

From @FWR's response, it sounds like Virtuozoo is virtualization software, used to create the virtual private server image. It is not a control panel, as cPanel, WHM, Plesk, LPCP, etc. are. You don't actually need a control panel, as you should have a command line interface available. It's just a convenience, wrapping a GUI around various command-line utilities and such. You can do all this stuff manually, if you are so inclined to learn all of it, but a web-based GUI is so much more convenient for most routine work.
