2 question about subcategories.

Hello everybody, I need some helps about the subcategories:

 

1) How can I hide the empty ones?

 

and more hard to solve :P :

 

2) I've a lot of subcategories (more than 100) on one category. How can I split the subcategories on more pages in the index.php? I.E with 100 subcategories:

first 10s subcategories and at the bottom 1 of 10 pages and so on...

Sorry Chris, for the first question is ok, but for the second I NEED to use the subcategories picture on the index.php file. So the only way I've seen at this moment is to use the pages option, but I don't know where/how to modify the files.
