Show only 1 level of categories in main navigation?

Hi all,

 

I am having trouble finding a solution to my problem in the old fashioned Google way. I have left hand navigation for my categories. Top level categories are Aftershave, Perfume, Gift Sets, Cosmetics.

 

As you can imagine the next level of categories under each of the main ones will be an immense list (basically the manufacturers list). What I want is to make it so that the next level doesn't pop out when you enter the top level. I assume it will be something simple in includes/boxes/categories.php but I can't see anything obvious in there.
