How to find out what my oscommerce name server was? (desperately need help!)

Hey Everyone,

I'm neither a web site deisgner nor do I have one working with me. I did manage to over a year ago though get a oscommerce web site up and running, and doing farely well from that storefront.

A few years before I started the oscommerce site I attempted (foolishly) to try and maintain and run a site through powweb (big mistake). Well I finally got the oscommerce site up and running, and had powweb point to the oscommerce name server, and all was well for over a year now, UNTIL!!! Powweb sent the e-mails for me to re-register my domain name with them to the wrong address, and in turn cancelled my service with them, ultimately disconnecting the site.

I hastly paid them to register my domain name again to get the site back up ( I'm losing a tremdous amount of customers a day right now), but the trouble is they can't find the oscommerce NS or Name server to properly "point" the domain to my oscommerce site name server. In order to get back to my site, I need to find what the name server was before powweb changed it (they have absolutely no way to look up what it was and have proven to be completely useless on this matter so far).

With me not knowing where to have them "point" the domain I can't even log on to my administration panel, and cant even acces my previous customers info!! This going to be very be a very tramatic blow to my business if I can't get this resolved soon, and desperately seek the advice of others that know much more then I on the subject to help!!

If I follow this, you registered the domain name through iPower and had the site hosted someplace else. Where was the site hosted? What is the domain name?

The nameservers are set by the host so you just need to contact your host to find what they are.

The domain name was www.vaughnperformance.com Powweb host's that domain name, but my online storefront is through oscommerce. The issue apparently is Powweb (the domain name host) doesn't know which nameserver to "point" the domain toward in order for me or anyone to be able to reach my online store.

When I do the who.is thing online it says the registrar is TUCOWS INC. I believe this is who I purchased the domain name through? Is it them I need to contact then in order for them to give me the name server that I need to have Powweb direct the domain name to? I apologize for my ignorance on the subject, but I purchased the domain name nearly three years ago and am having quite a bit of trouble deciphering where to go to get this elusive name server.

So....If I understand the next steps needed to aquire the nameserver, is 1)contact TUCOWS 2)they tell me the nameserver 3)I contact Powweb give them that name server 4) they "point" the domain name to my oscommerce site? Again, please forgive my ignorance, I have only the most basic understanding of how this all works.

No need to apologize. Everyone starts somewhere. :)

The problem, as I see it, is with this statement

but my online storefront is through oscommerce.
Oscommerce is the software package you use to run your shop. It isn't the host. You have to place your files for oscommerce on some server somewhere. Where you place those files is the host. That is who you contact to get the nameservers. According to a dns search, your domain name is pointing to domaindiscount24.net but they are not loading correctly, which I imagine is why you are trying to move. Does that company sound familiar?

If your domain is registered through TwoCows and you have access to it, then you can cut PowWeb out of the equation, unless you are hosting with them, since it is better to have complete control of your domain name at all time.

So you really need to find out who are hosting with. Do you pay a monthly hosting fee? Where did you upload your files in order to install your shop?

When you register a domain name through iPower, they, in turn, register it through Tucows (iPower is a reseller under Tucows). As Jack points out, Tucows will not be able to help you either. On the chance that you were on a shared server and using the shared SSL to access your admin panel (https) and have it bookmarked, you could look at the path in the URL for a clue as to who the host is.

Do these ring any bells? They do not appear to be the name servers for Powweb.

ns1.domaindiscount24.net, ns2.domaindiscount24.net

Ok, if I remember correctly, when I first did all this, (knowing less then, then I do now, which isn't much) I registered with Powweb, who I believe in turn had me purchase my name through Tucows(as baddog mentioned). I used Powweb web site building stuff for awhile, and after realizing it was terrible moved on to oscommerce, which I somehow loaded to Powweb server's?

The reason my nameserver is pointing to domaindisount24.com is because Powweb changed it there as I thought it might get my domain name to point back to my oscommerce web site (that server is oscommerce namer server when you do the who.is search). Well, that didn't work. I understand why now, but still don't know where to make it point. When I call Powweb, they have "no idea" what the nameserver needs to point to to get me back to the oscommerce site. Which is strange because unless I'm understanding wrong, are the one's that we're hosting my oscommerce site? Yet when they ask me which name server to switch to, they ask me to contact my host? I'm becoming increasingly lost.

Sounds like maybe you let your hosting package expire, in which case the site is probably gone forever.

Yup.....This is my fear as well. My hosting did in fact expire with Powweb. I had them auto paying for my subscription with them every three years. Well, it was getting time to renew again, and I assumed this was something that was supposed to auto renew as they specified it would. Well, for whatever reason (I've still not gotten an answer for this) it didn't. But all the notifications they sent me, we're sent to the wrong e-mail address (as in not mine at all). So one morning I realize the site is down and have been trying to get this straightened out ever since.

So it seems, it's possible the site is in fact "dust in the wind" at this point. And this, after I just gave these guys another $71 bucks thinking this was going to be something easy to take care of for them. WOW......I put an enormous amount of time into that site, not to mention this means all my customers account and billing info etc. are going to be lost. This is not good at all...................

Well, if you happen to have the files (including database backups) on your local computer, just upload them, double check the configure files, and set up the database (then restore it using your backup).

Powweb should however know whether or not you had a hosting account with them or whether they were just acting as domain registrants. If you had a hosting account with them, depending on how long ago it was that it expired, they might have a backup of the server on which it was hosted from which your site could be restored, assuming you don't have a backup of your store yourself? Although if they can't even tell you whether you had a hosting account with them or not then they probably won't.

(Note: Just because someone 'hosts' your domain that doesn't necessarily have to mean that your pages are being hosted - are physically located on servers run - by the same company. The domain can be pointed somewhere else. Do you perhaps remember signing up with another company to provide you with the oscommerce installation or did you upload and install it yourself on Powweb servers? Did you ever pay anyone else in relation to the osc setup?)

Domain Tools/Whois has a history of your domain going back to 2007-12-05 Possibly or probably even telling you where the domain was pointed however you will have to pay to find out this history ~ (unless you accept their 10 day try for free gold account and then cancel before 5) I don't have an account with them otherwise I would give you that information ;)

My store is currently running Phoenix 1.0.3.0

I'm currently working on 1.0.7.2 and hope to get it live before 1.0.8.0 arrives (maybe 🙄 )

I used to have a list of add-ons here but I've found that with the ones that supporters of Phoenix get any other add-ons are not really neccessary

I believe I backed up the site in the early phases. I think I will be able to recoup some of it, but a lot of customer info is going to be lost as well all the products that we're posted later down the line, which due to my own stupidity in not saving will be lost I believe.

Powweb does in fact have the website I built using their website building templates, but that site was almost completely useless. I may try the Domaintools/Whois xpajun mentioned as a final resort, but I've come to terms now that I may be simply starting over again. More then anything I would like to thank everyone that posted here in an effort to try and assist me with this. If only some of these companies I paid money to had the same initiative to help as you folks have I would probably not be in this predicament right now.

Thank you all very much
