Make Website Inactive - How?

While I'm working on my website I want to stop people getting access and put the whole website offline.

 

How can I achieve this?

I personally use this add-on: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/6332

 

You can put your store entirely offline and a Contact Us box exists for e-mail inquiries. You can tell your customers when your site is expected to be back online. It won't block your own IP address if you tell it not to, so you can fully navigate your store even if its blocked to others. You can even have it where your store is partially functional where it disables checkout.

 

It's a bit more complicated to install, but it's more flexible and has more features.
