Confused

I installed STS 4.5.8. Guess I am confused here, if you want to change the background from a color to an image you have to go to style sheet and change it there. Why install STS when you could do that without STS? Am I missing something here? Have read it is earier to change the look of your site with STS. Is there somewhere to go to change lets say the default page layout, color etc or do you have to go to each seperate php file and change things. Like I said very lost on STS.

You edit the file sts_template.html which will be in your sts_templates folder in includes for all apges except product_info.php.

You edit the file product_info.php.html for the product info template.

You can add other templates for individual pages but you should have the documentation of how to do this included with the package.

I use Dreamweaver CS4 to view the template and change things about however I do know that some people will say stay away from Dreamweaver (I only upload using my hosts ftp cient and would never recommend using Dreamweavers sync facility). The only time that you will have to use the stylesheet is for things that will change organically within your website eg things held under the $content tag of the template etc.

Any help?

Yes this help me some, still have a few things to figure out. So your saying to change the width, background color of my store I do it in the file sts_template.html not in the footer and header php's? To view the look of the things you changed, the way it will look on the web when published, do you have to also have the style sheet in the program to view it properly? I have coffee cup html editor and have copied the sts_template from the test folder to the program but when view all I see is the tags eq $breadcrumbs $myaccountlogoff | $cartcontents | $checkout etc. SO what I am asking how would I view what it would look like with out publishing the site. This is where I am confused. I have read the manual and can figure out what each tag stands for, might take a little time but thats fine. I have XAMPP installed on my computer which hopefully I can use to test locally before publishing, is that where I would veiw the changes? Would I need to put everything in the htdocs folder.

If you run Xampp you will be able to view the page on your local browser homepage and any product info page.

If you want to view your site locally you will need to keep the same structure of files as held on your webserver (including all images) so if that means your oscommerce install is in your htdocs folder then your templates will need to be updated to there in order to see the changes in your local browser.(sorry I cannot be of more help but I have very limited knowledge of Xampp)

Just have two copies of sts_template.html and product_info.php.html and use one as a rollback if you make any changes that you do not like.

And yes editing the widths etc is all done within the template.
