Hi Dave,

I may be mistaken but I think you only have to collect taxes from the state in which you located. If that is the case, change the default state of Florida (unless you are from Florida, then you are all set to go) to the state where you store is located. Then change the tax rate to the correct tax rate for your location.

Once done, your website will collect taxes from customers if they live in the state where you are located. All others are not charged taxes.

Where are you located? There is no "USA Tax Module". There are no national sales taxes or VAT. Most states collect their own "sales tax" on purchases made in that state. The seller has to collect and remit sales tax if they have a "nexus" (physical presence) in that state. Otherwise, it's up to the buyer to report and pay "use tax" (equal to sales tax) on anything bought from out of state. If you are outside the USA, you would not be collecting any sales tax, although either you or your customer will have to deal with import duties and fees, unless you're drop shipping from within the USA (in which case, you or your drop shipper may have to collect sales tax in that state).

Hi guys, this info is very helpful for what I am trying to do. I have a follow up question. So, I'm in the state of CA, that means that I am only going to change the tax information for that state correct? Now, do people from out of state that shop at my website get charged taxes? Are taxes assessed only to those who buy from the same state or is general across the board? I'm very new at this and I am just trying to figure how things work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If your only physical presence ("nexus") is in the state of California, you should be charging sales tax only on sales being delivered to CA addresses (for digital downloads: CA billing address). I think CA sets the tax rate by your (store) location, rather than the buyer's address, but be sure to check with your tax people. These things are subject to change.

Out of state buyers are not charged sales tax, unless you have a nexus in that state. Those buyers are responsible for reporting "use tax" and paying that to their state, usually as part of their annual income tax form. Note that some states consider affiliate programs and in-state drop shippers to be a nexus, and you would have to charge sales tax in those states (their appropriate tax rate, and remitted to that state). Also note that some states have reciprocal sales tax collection agreements with other states (e.g., NY and NJ, under some circumstances). Again, your state tax office should be able to tell you what applies.
