WebDev22 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Can anyone recommend any resources that can teach me how to set up a personal web server with osCommerce. We have some significant changes to make on a site and don't want to affect the live site. Thanks.
usernamenone Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 A localhost is what you want and for Windows it is called a WAMP look here I use Apache2Triad and WampServer but you can find one that suites your needs.
♥geoffreywalton Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 I use xampp, see url below for apache friends. Lots of documentation so enjoy. jhande Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 I too use XAMPP, but a slightly older version (1.6.1). I heard here that there are problems using the newer version with osC. - :: Jim :: - - My Toolbox ~ Adobe Web Bundle, XAMPP & WinMerge | Install ~ osC v2.3.3.4 -
WebDev22 Posted December 6, 2009 Author Posted December 6, 2009 I've installed WAMP. Is it possible to set up a localhost that connects to the live database?
usernamenone Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 That is exactly what your localhost WAMP is. The M in WAMP is for MySql.
WebDev22 Posted December 6, 2009 Author Posted December 6, 2009 That is exactly what your localhost WAMP is. The M in WAMP is for MySql. What I meant was is it possible to not set up a separate local database environment and connect to the database in production? Does that make sense?
♥FWR Media Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 I always hear about Wamp or Xampp on these forums, has nobody ever used NuSphere Tech Platform I've not tried it myself as I like to build the individual packages but these guys are extremely professional (better IDE and debugging than ZEND) so i'd imagine it would be excellent. usernamenone Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 has nobody ever used NuSphere Tech Platform No, have not and will not use the one you recomend. $250.00 aand $500.00 a package put togher with opensource free. WAMP is free. Brett Oscommerce is php and database driven application, It must be in a web server application to view the functions and the database must also be used for it to function. If you have any other questions I suggest you read up on Osc and WAMPS to choose if it is the applications you want to use as I havn't a clue what questions you have about a localhost. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAMP http://en.wikipedia....wiki/OsCommerce

If you have any other questions I suggest you read up on Osc and WAMPS to choose if it is the applications you want to use as I havn't a clue what questions you have about a localhost. Brett's question is clear enough. He wants to connect to his live database from scripts running on his localhost. Remote MySQL connections are possible in principle, but the host provider's server setup may not allow it. I can think of more than one reason why I wouldn't want to do it anyway, www.jyoshna.com. Currently using OsC with STS, Super Download Store, Categories Descriptons, Manufacturers Description, Individual Item Status, Infopages unlimited, Product Sort, Osplayer with flashmp3player, Product Tabs 2.1 with WebFx Tabpane and other bits and pieces including some I made myself. Many thanks to all whose contributions I have used!
