Guest
I would suggest NO folder is given permission 777, 644 would be the highest access level I would assign any folder. 777 allows ANYONE from ANYWHERE access to that folder. This is not something you want do to. Chris
FIMBLE
I agree with Chris, though for folders 755 is deemed to be acceptable so long as you do not own the folders in this case 555 should be fine. 777 is going to get you hacked for sure at some point. You need to talk to your hosts to get this resolved, ask them if the have SU-EXEC installed and active, (on a Linux server) Nic Sometimes you're the dog and sometimes the lamp post [/url] My Contributions

MrPhil
Folders (directories) will not work with 644 permissions. You need at least 755. If you still get the message about not being writable, try 775 and finally (if nothing else works) 777. It depends on how your server is set up. You may not want to leave the directory at 777 for any longer than it takes to upload whatever you're uploading, as it is a security exposure on a shared server. http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=327395&view=findpost&p=1443272

I hate having to run php as a cgi and incur the speed penalties (fastcgi isn't so bad) just to have 0755 writeable directories it seems servers/the internet are getting slower by the day due to hack prevention .. on my personal server at least I can still run php at a proper speed as a module along with 0777 directories. Ahh, yes now I remembered why I am using 777 for folder permissions - server related issues - especially admin section - password protect directory - some addons files also require 777 permissions to work - try and test Getting the Phoenix off the ground
volts
Hi guys, many thanks for all the answers to my query. But I am very new to this. All those answers about changing the permissions to 777 for folder permissions etc does not help me. Where do i find these permissions to see what it is at the moment and then to change them to what you guys recommend? I hope I am making sense. The programm was loaded onto my hosting companies server. I am logging in as an administrator and then trying to set up my shop. Do I need to work with files and folders in Dreamweaver aswell? Many thanks Volts
multimixer
Go to your hosts cpanel (not the osCommerce admin panel), click on "filemanager", find the folder "images", check it, and then press on button "permissions" that must be somewhere around (maybe on the top, next to buttons "delete", "edit" etc) There you can try the different settings, start trying with 755 My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
