Selling Downloadable Items Question

Hi. I'm so new to oscommerce that I'm green...so please be patient with me here. I'm trying to set up a store where I can sell stock images. I've managed to figure out how to get paypal working for me but not how to make a page that automatically send a message via email to the buyer that includes the download your product file.

Can someone help me please? I've seen electronic book publishers use oscommerce for their sites and KNOW it can be done but for the life of me can't figure out how to set it up to do this.

That's a bit of a confusing sentence. You want 'a page' 'to send' an email that 'includes the download'? It sounds like you want osCommerce to send the product as an email attachment. osC won't do that, in fact it won't even send an email with a link to the download. All it will do is send the customer an email saying their purchase was successful. To get to the download they have to login to their account, if you haven't made downloads available when the purchase completes. If you have then the links to the downloads appear on the checkout success page. If you have not then before downloads are available the order status needs to be set to a level that is high enough for them to be activated, and you need to do this manually if you haven't set up the status of the payment type to make them available automatically on payment. Then the customer will get access to them from the order details on their account.

www.jyoshna.com. Currently using OsC with STS, Super Download Store, Categories Descriptons, Manufacturers Description, Individual Item Status, Infopages unlimited, Product Sort, Osplayer with flashmp3player, Product Tabs 2.1 with WebFx Tabpane and other bits and pieces including some I made myself. Many thanks to all whose contributions I have used!

Okay, I see. Thank you. Here I've been trying to figure out how to do something oscommerce doesn't do...lol. So I'll try to figure out now how to make the downloads available through the customers' accounts at my store. Thank you for explaining this to me. I appreciate the time. :D

Hi there. Alright, this is what I've done.

1. Enabled downloads for my store

2. Added my downloaded image product to catalog/download folder

3. Created a new Product Option called download

4. Created a new Product Value called e-products

5. typed in the file name of the image product in the catalog/download folder

Still I'm having problems. Again paypal accepts payment but on the customer account page there is no download link.

Am I missing a step or is there something I need to change in my configuration php file? If so, what needs to be changed?

Have you created a 'download available' order status with a status ID of greater than 10 (or whatever you set the download order status to if you changed the default value) and set the order status to the 'download available' status?

Ben, no I haven't. How do I create that? Is it on paypal that I create it or in oscommerce? As I said, I'm very new so if you could tell me how to create a 'download' available order status and a status ID I'd be very grateful.

To make downloads available after a paypal payment you should really add the super download shop or downloads controller add in. They automatically check that a payment has been made. If you dont wish to add a add in to do this, you must login to admin and alter the status of the order to a new download available status. the link will then be available in your customers account page.

I would use one of the contributions

I donwloaded the Super store download to my computer but I have no idea where to put it in the files of my store. I've looked but can find no instructions on how to do any of this that is written for someone new like me. All of the instructions and guides I've found are for people already familiar with oscommerce and with online selling. This is why I'm so green at all of this. Can you tell me what files go where after I download the Super Store contribution?

Thank you

The super download shop comes with instructions. Open the file in the zip called install. You will need to download a program called winmerge and use that. The easier install is downloads controller. if you have unmodified files i would use that.

To manually alter the download status login to admin, click on customers, click on orders and click on edit for the invoice on the right hand side. When the new page opens for that order, towards the bottom of the page you will see a status box with a drop down list next to it. Alter the pending to delivered. the customer will then be able to log into their account and see the download link.

Thank you so much for the instructions! I wish I had more time to get in and do this today...I'm kind of excited. I KNEW I was very close to having it set up and that i was missing something somewhere. I'll be home again tomorrow evening and will give this a try. I REALLY appreciate your time and patience on this. I'd had friends that said oh just go with this other program...its easier. But I've found that most programs that are easier usually aren't as robust either. Plus, Godaddy had a install option for oscommerce and that's something I TRULY appreciate.

Anyway, I really do appreciate your help. In a couple of days I'll let you guys know if I'm completely retarded or actually capable of following directions and learning. ;)
