When I enter my domain name/catalog I just receive a page which reads

Open Source E-Commerce Solutions 2007 year

By adding /admin and logging in as an administrator I can see that the database is intact and all products seem to be in order.

I have another site which links ro this one and from there I can link into any indivual product. But the product list down the left hand side will only link to

Open Source E-Commerce Solutions 2007 year

again

Can anyone help me here

I don't think that is enough info, the text is not standard osc.

What is your domain? you can pm me if you don't want it in the forum.

We initially corrected this problem simply by moving in a version of the index.php file from a backup. However, 5 weeks later we discovered that the site had been completely compromised and that someone had set up a Google honey pot engine that was redirecting people to a scare site that tried to get people to install fake anti-virus spyware.

I don't know if these two events were connected or not, but I would recommend watching for an engine.php file in your site root directory if the "Open Source E-Commerce Solutions 2007 year" message shows up. If you are interested in hearing more details about the attack, send me a private message.
