Minimum /maximum values

Hi.

I'm new to this so I apologise in advance!!

 

I'm now working through the initial set up on the admin page and have got as far as minimum values. Does this mean how many 'lines' for their name etc or how many 'letters'???

I believe it means how many charachters for example I have mine set to a min value of 2 for first name so at least 2 letters in the name.
