how to generate invoice numbers

Hi I have looked at admin cPanel on orders which require processing. When an invoice is issued its not generating an invoice number on the invoices is there a way to enable a function for this?

There is a add-on in the contributions that will add both invoice number and date to both the invoice and the shipping slip - can't remember what it's called though :rolleyes: there is a possibility that fancier invoices may have it as well
