Guest
Has anyone setup a shop in New York State? I was on the phone with NY State Tax help and they said I have to seperate every tax zone in NY and charge a specific tax per county not as the entire state. Can anyone assist me with this? I can't beleive this is true with over 100 different counties and tax rates in NY. Thanks

mugitty
You might want to get a second, even a third opinion. I ran into the same answer in Washington, then called another person in a different city but with the same department and was told I only had to collect at the rate effective in the location from which products were being sold. In other words, some of these public servants aren't all that familiar with the laws they're supposedly "officially" citing ... if you want to REALLY see something that doesn't set up right out of the box without some tweaking, try being a Foster Parent! Acronym B.O.Y.
In other words, some of these public servants aren't all that familiar with the laws they're supposedly "officially" citing They aren't supposed to be familiar with it. Every single piece of paper work that I have (trust me its a lot) from the State of New York as well as almost all the papers from NYC clearly state that the state nor its employees are qualified to give legal advice, that it is best to consult a lawer if you have questions. The State and its empoyees will not offer legal advice or alternative explanations aside form those officially published by the state. Bottom line: They will give you the letter of the law and that's it. Anything else you need to go hire a lawyer if you don't understand it. Ian
Unforyuantely, this is true. A number of States in America also have 'county' specific taxes. New York is just one of the examples. Unforyuantely at the moment osCommerce does not support sub-zones. There is however a work-around. That is to create a new zone. For example. New York State. Lets assume New york Queens, and New York Bronx have county specific taxes. There is already a zone created for New York. Create two new zones New York - Bronx New York - Queens Then use admin->tax zones to set the tax rates for these two new zones. In the catalog side, if someone creates a new account, and enters new york as their state they should be then offered a drop down showing New York # New York - Bronx # New York Queens. BTW I am not from USA, and have not tested this. Trust me, I'm an Accountant.

The article from the NY State tax code that states we have to charge individual tax's per county is page 17 paragraph 3 /4. http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publication.../Pub750_302.pdf That's how I read it. :? www.adorablecharms.com
gnehc
hi, for what it's worth .. currently (without the internet tax debacle), i just charge all orders shipped in ny, the rate of 8.25%. sure i wish it could be lower for my customers. but, for the volume of orders i get from ny, it's much less of a headache to just charge what it is in my jurisdiction (nyc, 8.25%).
