tcpinhead Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 Now that MS1 is out it is time to get to work. I have been experimenting with other snapshots and have a tentative go ahead to overhaul our store. I am going to have to make it look similar to the html one I have now. My Question(s): What order do you go about approaching a new site? Do you start with functionality and just make it live and then modify later? Or do you start with the look and go live when it is done? I will have to have the look finished for this one but I have other personal ones that don't have anything up yet. My current store is organized similarly to the way OSC works and shouldn't (I hope) be too hard to modify. You can check out my html site if you like http://www.thermoworks.com. Comments are always appreciated. I am trying to make a list of files I will have to modify. I'll post it when I finish it and maybe someone will be able to correct any mistakes I have made. Thanks for reading. I'm just curious.

If it's ready to run, I would go online ASAP. Search engines take a long time to come. The sooner you're online, the better. If there is already a working online store that you're updating, I would wait until you have all functionality built into the new version. It's a commercial decision in my opinion. Christian Lescuyer
tcpinhead Posted February 19, 2003 Author Posted February 19, 2003 Christian, I agree with your comments. My Thermoworks site is up and doing well. We have outgrown a straight html shop and need something driven from a database. I am going to convert that one and relaunch when it is 100% done. We get spidered regularly and I want to make sure I don't mess with that. I have been watching the SID threads and know I will have that to look forward to. The other sites I have planned are for me personally. I probably tend to focus more on the visual aspect than I should. The products we would sell will be made personally by me (art and such) and I just haven't had any time to get product produced and photos taken. That would be my first step. Then I would put something up that is lightly touched (css) and completely customized later (hopefully). Starting with an OSC layout and pushing and pulling is much easier than fitting it into something existing. As far as I can tell I will need to modify all the php files in the catalog dir for the shop. Does anything in the admin dir show through to shoppers? Thanks for the comments.
Christian Lescuyer Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 Does anything in the admin dir show through to shoppers? No, but you have to protect the admin directory with a password (.htaccess/.htpasswd files on Apache servers). Christian Lescuyer
