Im somewhat new at this and I have no idea how to log on to the root server in order to change the file permission for catalog/includes/configure.php to 777.

1. the subject title of your post should be "how to change file/folder permission on server". "root server" normally refers to root access to a (dedicated) server, not a website, and would be via ssh which requires you to know linux quite well;

2. changing permission is a subject that has been asked numerous times on the osc forums;

3. it depends on your host, sometime you can do it in FTP, but more likely in cPanel;

4. why you want to change it to 777? which is a bit of being suicidal.

Hi Ken,

The pre install indicates an error instructing me to change the file permisson before moving on.

Changing file permissions

The permission on the catalog/includes/configure.php file needs to be set to 777 by logging into your root server and running "chmod 777 configure.php".

Im running php/mysql and using apache as a server on my pc. just really leanring.

in that case, windows file manager or what it is now called windows explorer would do the job. right click on the file then properties, clear the read only box. after all, its your pc, i suppose you can get to anywhere you like on your pc, cant you?
