I bought an osCommerce template and I finally was able to install it on my database server...However...how do I actually install it so I can edit it? I really don't understand how to even start the editing process to where I can put all the correct information for my company. Is there anyway I can just edit the template through Dreamweaver? Please help!!!!

If your shop is installed on your server and the domain name pointed to it, it is live, unless it is being blocked somehow. So you will need to login to your admin area, which is at http://your-domain-name.com/admin and edit the settings. Start in the configuration section and work your way down. If that is not what you needed to know or if you have other questions, ask again.

You can edit it via DW but it won't work like you probably expect it to and that is not the best choice anyway.

Oscommerce has a steep learning curve, but not an impossible one. If you try to do too much at once when you are new, you may well become too frustrated to continue. Just some free advice, for what it is worth.

Hi, I understand what you're going thru. I joined OSCommerce about a month ago, never built a website before. It is a steep learning curve but so long as you don't try to do anything too fancy you should get thru'.

Take a look at my site if you like http://www.ironmongeryshoponline.co.uk to see what Ive managed so far. Ive had a few problems as the forums will testify but nothing major.

I still need to figure out a few things, ie how to add addons & contributions, but you can live without these. I've recently heard of something called TAS which can help with template design changes and may use this on my next site. If anyone else has come across TAS I would appreciate their comments.

The forums are quite helpful, although some of the more experienced members can be a bit unforgiving in their responses to newbies, just don't take it personally. There are plenty of other newbies out there, just read the forums for similar problems to your own and the solutions advised.

And since you have a purchased template be very careful about installing contributions downloaded from this site.

They're usually written for "stock" osC code, not "template" code.

Your code will probably be different so you may have to vary from the install directions just a bit.

And remember the cardinal rule of web site editing - BACKUP ANYTHING BEFORE YOU EDIT IT!

PHP like any programming language is very unforgiving and plays no favorites - you make a mistake and the page (or the whole site depending on what is it you made a mistake in) may stop working altogether.

Something that doesn't work quite like you want it to is better than something that doesn't work at all.

If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.
