2 right columns side by side

Hello. I'd like to have 2 columns (either right or left) side by side so that I could use one for advertisements and maybe other boxes. Can somebody please explain to me how I could possibly do this? I understand that I will have to have another name, such as "right_column2" or such. I've looked around the forum and have fooled around with the index and column pages but I just can't seem to get them next to each other. I'm using the v2.2 RC2a store.

any ideas? Putting in STS for this one maneuver seems unnecessary. or perhaps is there a way to split a column in two?
