okay so I have not got a payment thing set up... how do i configure my site so that customers are able to pay via paypal?

simply download the PayPal IPN module and install it.

Please read this line: Do you want to find all the answers to your questions? click here. As for contribution database it's located here!

8 people out of 10 don't bother to read installation manuals. I can recommend: if you can't read the installation manual, don't bother to install any contribution yourself.

Before installing contribution or editing/updating/deleting any files, do the full backup, it will save to you & everyone here on the forum time to fix your issues.

also in order to have this working properly do I need a paypal express merchent account? for money to go into my account when customers pay for goods? what are the charges for a merchent account?

Yes, you need to have a merchant account to get money from paypal. About how to do this, charges etc the best is you visit the paypal website. There you can also see the differences between the payment ways.

osCommerce has some pre-installed paypal modules, you can enable them under admin>modules>payment

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (13) in /home/sc/public_html/oscommerce/admin/includes/functions/database.php on line 19

this is different issue to PayPal, simply re-check the mysql settings in configure.php file.
