Best way to close store

We have a client that has two stores that are virtually identical. Since this might lead to issues with duplicate content, we are recommending shutting down the weaker store and setting up a 301 redirect. The client is fine with it but wants us to save all the code just in case it comes in handy later.

What's the best way to shut down the store? Is it okay to leave all the code online and edit the robot.txt file telling search engines not to index the site? Or, do all the pages need to be removed?

If you redirect, it doesn't matter if there are any files on the server or nor.

But why to have them on the server? The best is you keep them on a local computer together with the last backup of the database.

PS I would not recommend to shut down something that is already listed and bookmarked and has incoming inks etc. Change a little the layout, descriptions and meta information and I think it will be fine for google.

We're considering changing the content but we fear there might still be a connection and a risk. Page views have dropped significantly for both sites since putting them both on osCommerce with the same hosting company.
