Disaster Recovery for an OS Commerce site

I'm working with somebody on an osCommerce Installation that they've been using for over 2 years on a previous web host. As it turns out they were not pleased with the previous host, and decided to move the site. The previous host moved this site for them... or so they claimed.

What they did was take an http spider and crawl all the pages of the site, auto-save them as html, and then upload those html files to the new server as the osCommerce 'pages'. Quite unbelievable.

So i'm sitting here with the markup that was generated by every product page, as well as a full db dump. Here is what i'm wondering if this community can help me with:

I can determine that this is an osCommerce site, but not which version. I've not worked with osCommerce before, but i've worked with many many cms platforms. I have reinstalled the DB, it appears to be intact, but i have no admin files whatsoever for this site (as they couldn't be read by the spider they used to generate the pages) so i'm stuck without knowing what version of osCommerce this is to attempt a reinstall!

I have taken a look at the files for both of the major 2.2 milestone revisions, and a couple other versions i found on sourceforge, and all of those install sql scripts include some tables that my install does NOT have. The 3 that i noticed right away are "banners", "banner_history", and "configuration" as well as some others. My db here does not have those tables at all. These are obviously large db differences, which i'm taking to mean a large jump in versions (more than a simple patch would attempt to undertake).

Can any of you identify which version of this software i might be working with here? and if so, are there files of that version available anywhere for me to try and transplant the site into its correct version to rebuilt the settings?

Thanks in advance!

If this is really an osCommerce store, it's older than 2.2 MS2, since that version had the tables you mention. It could possibly be MS1, or it could be a CVS build that won't match anything. Hard to tell without some of the code to look at. You might be able to use the upgrade files included with MS2, then upgrade further to RC2a. It might be easier to start over with a fresh install of RC2a and just add the pages back from the information in the HTML files. It's going to be a big job in either case.

More info on old versions here.

Thanks for the reply Jim, that sounds about right. I'm going to give the CVS a shot, as i don't think i looked at that one before. I have also thought of your other suggestion - of creating a new MS2 install and just porting their old content into it via the products tables. It would at least get them 30% of the way back to where they were... Either way, thanks for the info!
