Allow Spiders

I was on page 1 of the Goolge search engine. I read about turning on "allow spiders" and thought this would keep my ranking and maybe move it to the top. I dropped to page 10 of Google in one day. Is there a reason for this? Also, how do I enter keywords for each item in my shopping cart?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with an "Allow Spiders" setting. Do you mean "Prevent Spiders?"

Probably :) It's where the search engines are allowed to "crawl" your site I think. Immediately after I turned it on in oscommerce, Google began searching my site. I could tell because of the Who's Online feature where I searched the number code for that customer. Google went through everything and then I dropped out of site to page 10 or so. I've changed the setting back to prevent spiders now, but I do not know how to undo the damage. It took me months to climb to the first page. I thought perhaps the problem is that my oscommerce pages do not have, or I don't know how to set, a meta title, description, and keywords. Any thoughts?

Prevent Spiders does not block search spiders; it prevents them from getting SIDs. Turning this off will allow Google to get a SID with each page, potentially returning thousands of duplicate pages. The duplicate page penalty could sink your ratings.

Leave Prevent Spiders turned on, and upload the latest version of the spiders.txt file from the Contributions area. Then set up a Google Webmaster account and ask them to remove the duplicates. This may be a painful process.

Page titles are important. I would add one of the SEO contributions for Meta tabs that allows individual titles on your pages. The Meta description tag is somewhat worthwhile as well. Meta Keywords are worthless.

Thank you very much Jim! What's the old saying - No pain no gain :D. Seriously I do appreciate the help.

Best regards to you,

Terry
