schatham Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I have a question about using tax rate in OS Commerce, and if/how you can do it using multiple tax rates. Where I live, there are 3 taxes I have to apply, two of which are based on product. Here are a couple of examples: Customer X buys a book (Tax rate 1 & Tax rate 3) for a total of 6.75% + 1.0%. Customer X also buys a bag of coffee beans (Tax rate 2) for a total of 2.0%. Customer Y buys a tin of cookies (Tax rate 2) for a total of 2.0% Customer Y also buys a Gift Certificate (no sales tax). If adding these products to my website, how do I calculate Tax rate 2 for anything in a "food" category, and Tax rate 1 & 3 for anything listed as "non-food" and not include something like a gift certificate, which isn't subject to any sales tax? I am trying to set up the appropriate attributes/categories for all of these cases I can think of, but need to have the tax rate apply differently for different products. Any help appreciated.
♥ecartz Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 When adding a product, you can select a tax class for it. Simply put your three different kinds of product in three different tax classes (none is a valid option for the gift certificate). Then when specifying your tax rate, put it on the appropriate class. Always back up before making changes.

Thanks - this answered my question. I had had 2 tax rates installed, but not the tax classes - hence my confusion!!! Thank you again!! Steve
