tresseh
Hey guys. The store i am in the process of creating has a database of 10,000 records imported from HTML. Using the way they were laid out originally, i have managed to get the data into the 11 categories that they were originally divided. Unfortunately the client needs these breaking down into further sub-categories due to the fact that the main 11 categories held several sub-categories in one file. There is no way to automate this, so the client will need to manually move each record into its own sub-category. Obviously doing this one by one on 10,000 records is not going to be easy. To simplify this task, is it possible to add a checkbox to the admin listings, and modify the "move" function to loop through the checked items and move them in the normal fashion? Copying products in this way isnt necessary, although i guess that feature could also be useful. Anyone done anything like this? I would imagine Linda would have idea's on this, as most of the admin changes contributed have been Linda's handywork. Any ideas? Regards, Jay. loxly
Are the product ids or names grouped by sub-category at all? How are you importing them all? [no external urls in signatures please, kthanks]
tresseh
The original format was just a simple HTML listing of the records. These were groups of sub-categories on one page, for instance: House, Club, Garage & Commercial Dance = house.html Old Skool Hardcore, Jungle & Drum'n'Bass = hardcore.html Hiphop & Gangsta = hiphop.html etc, etc Taking house.html as an example - this page had a plain html table of all records that fit the genre descriptions House, Club, Garage or Commercial Dance. These were not delimited to the seperate genres, they were all in one list. So using Excel and EasyPopulate i just imported the records from each page to a category named the name of the original file. So using house.html as the example again, i imported those records to a category called "House". The problem is that this category now has records which *should* be in sub-categories called "House", "Club", "Garage" and "Commercial Dance". There is no current grouping for this, and the client is aware that he will have to do this sorting manually. There is no option of automating this grouping, it will definately need to be done manually. To 'aid' this process, i want to create a move 'loop' to loop through records that have been checked in the admin product list. Does this make sense? Regards, Jay. loxly
Yes, it makes sense, but if you have sections of products grouped in a spreadsheet, you can assign the subcategory and use Easy Populate again to upload them. If you want them only in the subcategory, delete the main category they are all in now (easier than deleting one by one) and set it back up either in admin (if the site is already live) or define it in Easy Populate and upload it. So give the client a spreadsheet with the main categories and have them assign the subcategories, and POOF you're done. You can do it one section at a time to make it easier. Does that make sense? And you never know, Linda might have a better idea!! deb [no external urls in signatures please, kthanks]
tresseh
Great minds think alike ;) I have already put this solution to the client, and we agreed that it wouldnt be the best course of action, as he wants the site live ASAP. He has said that (quite rightly) he'd rather have the site up and running and functional, with just the main categories set up, so that he can sub-categorise the records as he goes along rather than have to get the product listing absolutely correct and sub-categorised before going live, as this will take a considerable amount of time to accomplish. Thank you for your great idea though, it could well have been the solution! Regards, Jay.
loxly
You can still fix the subcats with EP as you get the info. Just do your changes in the middle of the night and check to see if anyone is online first :-) Or, even better, use a different category name for the subcategory upload, or change the name of the existing category before you start the upload (I like this idea! Gotta love brainstorming!) Then all the stuff is there and when all the products are in the right place delete the big, not needed category. tresseh
Ok, now im liking that idea! Think i will install enable/disable categories first so as to be able to disable one category so that they are not both showing at any one time. That way we can go live, and then update the listings 'overnight' for each individual category until they are complete! Great idea Loxly! Well done! Regards, Jay. loxly
I sould be sleeping, it's 6:20 am here, but I get my best ideas between 5-6 in the morning. :D And I love a good brainstorming session, see I didn't think about the categories on/off, that will be awesome!!! (did you know a new loaded got posted today?) [no external urls in signatures please, kthanks]
tresseh
Have you been up all night? I recommended Loaded to another OSC user today, and checked the site to get a download link and saw that V5 was posted  Typical, i have just finished a MAJOR re-write of the products listing and search page as well as a host of other changes. Starting to lose track of my own changes, let alone keeping up with others. As far as i know, no new features, just a good cleanup and bringing the code up to the latest snapshot? Regards, Jay. loxly
Right. (and yes, I've been up all night -again-) I was waiting for the code update to start on my major projects. Now I don't have any excuse and have lots and lots of work to do. First thing I need to figure out is how to generate a link to product description pages from other dynamic pages.... Off to bed for a nap... unless I get another idea that makes me jump back to the keyboard!
