MS1 ?

Birdy - you mentioned MS1 is on the way, should we hold off on customizing our snapshot from a week or two ago until it comes out? I hear its going to be a fairly major release.

You said it should be out in a couple days, on Feb 11. That still true?

well according to the last weekly summery

All of the Milestone 1 entries found on the Workboard have been completed (some entries are still pending commit or pending to be reviewed, one has been moved to MS2), which leaves the question "when will Milestone 1 be released?".

Bug reports will be looked into over the weekend to make sure the main features and logic existing are known-bug free. No target date is set, though Sunday looks to be the perfect candidate.

that was posted on Thur 2-06 so Sunday would be 2-9 today is 2-15

so I would hope it will be anyday now, all of the "work" is done, now I think they are adding contributions, and cleaning the code up

if you have not done soo, look at the work board

We may miss that by a few days.

I do have two questions for the forum members in general.

When MS1 is released should it be a supported release

where we are going to provide bug fixes or will it be

good enough if we just make the release

and move on toward MS2?

For all of you using the daily snapshots, will you continue

to update your shops or will you likely stick with MS1 for

a while?

Depending on what the "bugs" are

if they cause a major disruption to the shop function or secutrity, yes, if they are just minor things I think we, as the community, can fix them ourselves

and I will be updating at each MS release, as , I thought, these we going to be "stable" release's

I'm anxiously await the MS1 release (and its associated Loaded release), which will be my "base" install for a while. In fact, unless there are major issues, I'll (try to) wait for 2.2-final before making any major updates. With that said though, MS3 will be tempting due to the increased use of classes and templates, and any significant security or usability improvements will inevitably throw that plan off.

Therefore, my plan is to go production with MS1 with several contributions added for usability and functionality, and to maintain a testing platform that mirrors the CVS commits. Unless there are major improvements to security or usability, the MS1 will be the one in production until 2.2-final.

So, having said all that, I vote for MS1 being a supported release.

I think it is worth pointing out that is could be 6 months or longer

before MS4 is out.

(Historically speaking it could be 6 months before MS2 is done

but that is not how long we intend to take)

I'd be of the mind that MS1 should be supported, but only to the extent that there are any "major" bugs that affect functionality or security.

I'll be sticking with it as far as my operational site(s) until the next milestone (or the one after), though I'm likely to always have a semi-current snapshot to observe/toy with just to keep up with what's going on.

My two cents.

That said, all you developers and contributors and oscommerce rock :)

Actually, a six month timeframe doesn't surprise or discourage me. But at some point, you have to pick a non-moving target and aim for that. I think the balance of features, logic revision and security changes in MS1 represent a good platform to support.

If you're looking for shorter timeframes between support releases, maybe the development team would prefer supporting the odd milestone releases: MS1 and MS3. That certainly wouldn't hurt my feelings. But regardless, I think MS1 should be a supported release.

It could actually even be six months before MS1 is out!

It sure seems like it's been that long since its planned release last Sunday, anyway. I'm having flashbacks to the Christmas Eve feelings I had as a little kid. This is fun, but, please, release the beast! I promise I've been good this year.

I think that MS1 would be a major psychological release.

For myself wondering what is new in the latest snapshot is always so tempting, so having MS1 would settle my worries until the next MS comes out.

So, I guess if MS1 would be a "stable" release with possibly bug fixes all the better. But in this case, it would be nice to have the community take of that and have the devlopers working on the next step

This time around I think I'm going to wait for Ian's loaded version and go with that. Save myself loads of time and worries about bugs.

Although, I haven't used Ian's loaded version before I still want to thank him for such a great service! ooops, went on a tangent here

That's a great point! Having a specific point around which to base your work is critical and just gives you a lot more confidence. It'd also make the work for the Contributions and the support Team Members a lot easier from the standpoint of having a defined target. Someone made a great analogy that applys quite well in this situation:

It's like trying to measure the length of a moving car with a thin rubber ruler. While its certainly possible, it sure is a lot easier with a parked vehicle and a tape measure.

Question -

Can we test for bugs before you release it? The more people on the more platforms you guys let take a look at it, the cleaner it can end up being (hows that for terrible grammar). You get the idea :)

Aside from this, I think as undesireable as bug fixing would be to the timeline and those like myself who are waiting with baited breath, I think its never smart to release something known to have more than a handful of bugs. This was that other fellow's point in that other thread.

Then again, you could just release it as-is and add a "use at your own risk" for those who wish to fix the bugs themselves. I'd trust you guys to fix them over anyone else doing so for me.

That is a good point.

The good news is that many people have been using the Daily Snapshots

quite a bit and I think it is fair to say the number of bugs would

be very low.

It's not like we're releasing a bunch of new modules that have not

been run in production... many shops are already up.

I guess it only makes sense to wait for MS1 then, versus customize the snapshot we downloaded a week ago.

My current store is buggy and falling apart though so if you guys could get a move on it... chop chop!

 only kidding.

Thanks 4 ur hard work.
