Hi

My website is pretty much finished and ready to be launched to the public at the end of the week.

Ive done quite a bit of marketing handing out leaflefts/business cards and adverts in local media and posters. Ive read about doing a free press release (has anyone done one of these and had any success from it ?).

I want to add the Header Tags to improve my position on the search engines like you would with a normal website but I have seen quite a few Header Tags contributions and addons.

Whats the best Header Tag addon or contribution to go with for best results ?

Is there anything else I need to do to improve my position on the search engines?

What pages need to be Header Tagged as I presume most will not need doing?

Thanks in advance

there is a LOT LOT LOT more to do than just headers and keywords. As a matter of fact, most people believe that search engines hardly use keywords as the main source of rank anymore.. There is a LOAD that goes into optmizing a website for search engines.

I COULD rewrite it, but I will give you a few points and link you to the rest of the article..

BACK LINKS - every time another website links to yours, its like a vote in favor of your site. The higher up the linking page is on google, the more value that vote has. (see article on how to get backlinks the RIGHT way) - carefull, there are people who promise you 10,000 backlinks in a week, these are the spammers we see on the forums and blogs

INNER WEBSITE LINKS - I have read that the main navigation, header content, and footer content are looked at as the most important content. They assume that you will have keywords there. So create descriptive links and add some links to your footer

ALT TAGS - use descriptive alt tags on all images to describe what the picture is about

Just wondering how important/why this is important for seo? I often forget to add ALT tags when adding images, is this hurting my seo?

YES!

Search engines don't just read the meta data in your code, but they also read and compare the content to the tags (to ensure relevance) and the same goes for image names and ALT tag descriptions.

They say a picture tells a thousand words? But this isn't so for the search engine bots that can't see them, they have to rely on the filenames and ALT descriptions.

Same goes for your page filenames - the more descriptive they are, the more likely the bot is to assign relevance to the content within.

Imagine a customer searching for a simple term like "reception furniture" - you may have such a category on your site with a fantastic pictures of "reception_chair.jpg", and "reception_table.jpg" etc. but if your ALT tags indicates "Blue reception chair - part of our RECEPTION FURNITURE range" then your search result will become more relevant.

Look at it as an opportunity to stuff even more kewords into your site.

Can anyone suggest a good way to add tags on OSC? I know how to do it in Dreamweaver, but am not sure how to go about it in OSC.

You need to install one of the meta tags contributions. There are quite a few, as mentioned here. I recommend Header Tags SEO though.

GREAT, thank you Jack. I am going to give it a try!

I have just finished the install of easy meta tags 1.6. Now how do I actually add the meta tags to my website?
