Initially starting with osC and editing the home page

Greetings. I'm just getting started using osCommerce. I'm a bit at a lost on where to get started. I put some simple text in the index.php and the English/index.php just to see if they'd show up. I am now getting:

 

"Warning Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/astone5/public_html/osC/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file."

 

I'd like to fix that before I keep poking around.

 

Also, I have started looking through this forum but am not quite sure where to start. I need to learn more on editing the index.php to start customising the home page. Pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I found the fix for the warning. I read a not into the sentence.

 

I still could use help being pointed to articles on customising the home page.
