e-barrym Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I keep hearing about osCommerce and I would to use it to set up an online store; But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to work with and how it actually works! Could someone please tell me whether I can actually set up an online store using osCommerce and what the average guy's meaning of osCommerce is? I would really appreciate it.

It is a comlpete software package that allows one to have an online store. Once installed and setup, it is ready to start taking orders. It can be edited as you like. There are thousands of code changes (called contributions) that allow you to alter how it works. You need a hosting account to use it. Most hosts have an automatic install script that will install it in minutes, though you may have to be careful with what version they install. Some host will install the package for you though they usually install it in a sub-directory while it should be in the root. It is fairly easy to use but there is a steep learning curve to it. From my experience, it takes about 2-3 months for someone who has never seen it before to become comfortable with using it. It can be frustrating at times but the rewards are worth it, in my opinion.
