osCommerce

The e-commerce.

getting to the merchant part?

I loaded osCommerce onto my site and edited it to reflect the data for sale on my home page; how do I proceed from there? It also looks like I still need to fill in some information within the information box on the lower left; when each link is clicked, all I get is a long box at the top and... "Put here your information..." particular to each link. Is this information provided to me once I have created a merchant accout with someone? And... how do I create a merchant account?! Must I select my own bank first and provide router/account information; or does the merchant provide this information to me? Lastly, I thought osCommerce was the merchant account, that doesn't seem the case now, it seems to be only a storefront with checkout and so on, am I missing something vital?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, I have never done this before! Thanks so much in advance.

Here are good places to start.

1. Knowledge Base

2. How do I ... Regularly Asked questions

3. osc Design & Layout

4. Newbie Roadmap

Regarding merchant accounts, different financial institutions have different rates. It's best to call around or go online and do some research. You don't have to stick with your bank. Most people starting out on their first e-commerce store use payment gateways such as Paypal, Authorize.net, etc to handle online payments which in turn deposit funds to your bank account.

Bryce,

Thanks for your help. Today I will read the four topics that you point out in your reply. Regarding merchant accounts; I take it that I was correct about osCommerce, that it is just a store front with a checkout facility for e-commerce. So, are you saying that I must contract with another business like Paypal or Authorize.net in addition to osCommerce, and that they are the actual merchant account facilitator? I guess I'll have to furnish them with my banks routing and account numbers, that's a scary thought!? Again, please forgive my lack of savy on this subject. Thanks so much Bryce.
