My site is now finally complete. After a long drawn out process, I have finished installing my SSL Certificate and I am ready to really start advertising this site. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

My site: The Bargain Cart

I am currently just learning osCommerce and PHP, but am always willing to help out.

Have successfully installed the following: Discount Coupons, UPS shipping module, Ultimate SEO URL's, Easy Meta Tags for SEO 1.0, Google XML Sitemap SEO v1.3, HTML Editor for Email and Newsletters.

Hey Neal,

I like your site. ;)

Now for the constructive critisism. :o

A lot of wasted space in your header, the 2nd table that's all bluish.

The left column seems a bit too wide.

Contact us page; nice there's a phone number but hotmail email accounts? Directed to another site to leave a message for you? Come on, that's two no-no's.

On the product listing page, the column headers stick out like a sore thumb. I would say you don't even need them. Also the products name text is too large on the page.

The footer; I'd probably try to align the 2CO image under the left column and then center the GoDaddy image between that and the text links on the right all in the bluish table row.

Nice work!!!

Thank you for suggestions. I have heard the same thing about the text size from my brother. I will have to take a look and see if I can't change that. I also gotta think of something to place in the header just under my site logo, I was thinking of a shopping cart or something along those lines.

You are welcome Neal

Just some thoughts...

Maybe a Specials infobox in the header? A box similar to those on your index page showing a few items with a clickable link to others.

Or New arrivals or Featured products, you get the idea.

I looked again at your site. Maybe match the product text to that on the index page or the size of the price on the product listing page?

I will have to work on the code a bit for the specials info box to appear in the header, but that's not a bad idea at all.

I did try to change the font, but to no avail. for some reason whenever I change the font size in the CSS stylesheet it never changes on the site. I even went as far as changing the font size to 0 px and nothing, weird. I am thinking that maybe it has something to do with the template? I dunno.

This is my first time working with Oscommerce and PHP for that matter, I have been teaching myself PHP on the fly.

Hey Neal,

I'm in the same boat - first osC and learning some PHP as I go.

Take a look in your stylesheet.css for either:

td.productListing-data

or

product_name

One of those "should" effect the text.

Hey, so it was product_name that needed to be changed in the stylesheet. Now I am looking for where I can get rid of the title on the product pages. But thanks for your help. I think the size that it's at now is good. If you could, could you let me know what you think?

Ahhh... That looks better. ;)

Title on the product pages... Exactly which pages? The category product listings?

Ya I think it is the category listing. I guess I should look in the stylesheet for anything related to category list.

It seems like you already know, but the banner space at the top should be filled by something, possibly a logo?

On the main page it would be nice if the images for the products could be clicked as well. Currently only the prices have a clickable link, which isn't my first choice to click if I want to get to that product.

It also seems like there are some hidden categories. I didn't know there was a grill accessories until I opened up the grill section. I think having it as its own option under outdoor living would be beneficial.

For the health and beauty, I think the text description for the foot bath is wrong. second to last sentence: "Smoothes rough skin on heads, elbows, and feet;" Is that suppose to say hands or heads?

Posted

Thanks for the input, I will make the changes. And that parafin bath is supposed to say hands not head.

I would like to fill the header space on the top with a logo but I just don't have the expertise to do it. I will check online to see if I can't add something there. I have photoshop but navigating around that to make a logo is really hard when you have no clue what you are doing.

If you have something you'd like me to work with I can possibly throw something together for you since you commented on my site. If not i'll just throw some of my own ideas together haha

Such as this page - http://www.thebargaincart.com/index.php?cP...jfaj68nodms0tm0 and remove the words "Bath & Body"?

Open your index.php file and look for this code:

<tr>
  <td class="pageHeading"><?php echo HEADING_TITLE; ?></td>
</tr>

There are 3 instances. Comment them out as below:

<tr>
<!-- <td class="pageHeading"><?php echo HEADING_TITLE; ?></td> //-->
</tr>

Chris,

thank you. I will take a look at the code shortly.

Do you think you could make an image similar to the one you made but as a cart with products in it?

He is talking about this neal

<td><table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">

<tr>

<td class="pageHeading"><?php echo $category['categories_name'] ?></td>

</tr>

</table></td>

Also, made this real quick

Yes... sorry Neal. :blush:

After seeing your code, your version is =

<td class="pageHeading"><?php echo $category['categories_name'] ?></td>

Since you are using a template, some code and locations are liable to be a bit different.

Just so you haven't been thinking i've left you hanging, i'd like to let you know the cart is about 100 times harder than a bin >=|

Jim,

Yeah I noticed some of the code is a bit different from that of the base oscommerce code. I did try to comment out that line of code but it did not change anything. I dunno. I asked some of my friends and they all already like the smaller font size.

hmm not anywhere in index.php here is the code below:

  <td width="100%"><table border="0" width="94%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
  <tr>
	<td><table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
	  <tr>
		<td class="pageHeading" ><?php
 $category_query1 = tep_db_query("select cd.categories_name, c.categories_image from " . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " c, " . TABLE_CATEGORIES_DESCRIPTION . " cd where c.categories_id = '" . (int)$current_category_id . "' and cd.categories_id = '" . (int)$current_category_id . "' and cd.language_id = '" . (int)$languages_id . "'");
  $category1 = tep_db_fetch_array($category_query1);

if ($category1['categories_name'] != "") {echo $category1['categories_name'];} else { echo HEADING_TITLE;}
?>
</td>
<?php
// optional Product List Filter

I viewed your source code again in my browser and then compared it to your posted code. The snippet of code is present in your index.php file.

Here is the browser viewed source code:

<!-- body_text //-->
<td width="100%"><table border="0" width="94%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
  <tr>
	<td><table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
	  <tr>
		<td class="pageHeading" >Bath & Body</td>
	  </tr>
	</table></td>

Here is the relevent code in your index.php file:

<td width="100%"><table border="0" width="94%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
  <tr>
	<td><table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
	  <tr>
		<td class="pageHeading" ><?php
 $category_query1 = tep_db_query("select cd.categories_name, c.categories_image from " . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " c, " . TABLE_CATEGORIES_DESCRIPTION . " cd where c.categories_id = '" . (int)$current_category_id . "' and cd.categories_id = '" . (int)$current_category_id . "' and cd.language_id = '" . (int)$languages_id . "'");
  $category1 = tep_db_fetch_array($category_query1);

if ($category1['categories_name'] != "") {echo $category1['categories_name'];} else { echo HEADING_TITLE;}
?>
</td>
<?php
// optional Product List Filter

Notice the -

<td class="pageHeading" ><?php

blah, blah, blah...

?>

</td>

// optional Product List Filter

Change it to -

<!-- <td class="pageHeading" ><?php

blah, blah, blah...

?>

</td> //-->

// optional Product List Filter

You could even change the attributes of that text in your sytlesheet.css = td.pageHeading
