I have a Musical Instruments Website and recently uploaded about 3200 fretted music book listings, when I uploaded the pictures the images folder became full after about a 1000 images and the folder of course was hard to manage.

Does anybody know what to do in this case?

Some hosts restrict the no of directory entries you can see using ftp but you can see them all usinf sftp, (believe it was godaddy)

1. for a file system, be it dos, windows or linux, a directory is seen and treated as the same as a file with a certain bits of the 'header' being 20 denoting a file whereas 10 denotes a directory (if my memory hasn't failed me). for this reason i cant see how and why it would be able to limit number of directories other than that it is a false-observation. the true is many hosts limit the number of "files" (directories included) to list in an attempt to reduce the load on the harddrive. the limit is in many cases 2000 on shared servers (No, go daddy is NOT the only host to impose this limit), once the limit is reached, any extra "files" (again directories included) wont show if you FTP to the server;

2. ironically, on shared servers, many hosts do not offer sftp. for (at least) some hosts, you would need to send in your passport to prove your ID to be granted the use of ssh on a shared server;

3. if there were a bridge (the FTP) over the english channel, who would prefer the under sea channel tunnel (the SFTP) to the bridge (FTP), especially for an average traveller/site onwer?

my two cents.

Just did some checking, it was hostgator, that only displayed 2000 entries, it occurred when I was on a site with 4,500 odd image files.

Took one phone call to the help desk. They said use file zilla, port 2222 (SFP using SSH2) and voila all the files and directories appeared.

Fortunately it has been the only site I've had this problem with but it was rather confusing for a while.

Nice link.
