I randomly get an error on my webstie. The error will show up and only lasts a few (30) seconds or so, but If I'm on my site often.... as in if I spend a day adding product, I'll see this error a few times. My guess is that that it happens every couple of hours... but I don't know. Is there a way to log this?

I asked my host why, they said everything is working fine... ran me around in circles saying I need a screen shot of the error (even though I told them exactly what the error said) and have told me it might just be temporary... well, final word I got from them is that because I use a 3rd party software ... osCommerce, that must be the problem. However I've never heard of code acting randomly.. as in, page loads fine for 90 percent of the time, then every once in a while it goes down...

Any ideas? Is my host BSing or could there be something going on with sessions or code (I use those terms like I know about them....) Here is the error I get, that lasts for 30 seconds or so... I've gotten this error at my house (on a mac with firefox) at work (on a pc (different isp) and with both firefox and ie) and my brother got the error as well on his computer (PC with some off the wall browser).

Also note... My host had a power failure not too long ago where my site was down for a whole day just about. I got the same error when that happened...

any ideas? could this be from bad code or is this a server/host issue???

If it's happening when you access the site from multiple locations (different ISP's), it's your host. They've got crappy bandwidth or possibly overloaded servers. E-commerce sites should always be hosted on a "high availability" platform (includes server & bandwidth). It'll cost you a little more, but if you're running a viable business, it should be worth it.

Are you using StartLogic? Sounds just like the problems I am having with them, and they suck.

I second this, especially with reseller accounts that are allowed to be oversold, the server can get overloaded some server can have hundreds of web sites hosted on them.

I used to get really poor service and up times, not i have my own server and the difference is fantastic!

It might seem like you pay more but you get it back with sales that otherwise would have been lost!

I am using startlogic.... and noticed when their servers went down earlier... I started looking around for a new host... FatCow has really good ratings... so I looked to get with them... they were down exactly when Startlogic was down.. Maybe same company, at least share the same servers...

For the note about virus protection, I dont run any on my mac, nor do I use any type of firewall... and I still get the error.

So if it comes down to it... can anyone recommend a server/host that they have had good experiences with?

What about a VPS? is that generally a better option. I'm looking at serverpoint.com linus VPS. Anyone know much more about that. I currently just run off a shared 4 dollar a month hosting deal... Maybe the extra money for a VPS is worth it. What are some opinions on this?

Kevin,

On one hand, I'm very sorry you're having trouble with your hosting solution....on the other hand, it's helpful to me to know that I'm not the only one having these problems and that the source is in fact Startlogic. I would guess it validates your concerns as well.

I just looked at serverpoint.com, and my opinion is that I will not go with them, since they clearly state that phone support is for emergency use only. While Startlogic really and truly sucks, at least I could get a humanoid to lie to me on the phone. :'>

I'm going to start taking a hard look at other companies, because these problems can only grow worse coming into the holiday season and I need to do something as soon as possible. I'll be happy to share my search results with you, and it wouldn't hurt for us to bounce thoughts off of each other. If you'd like to email me I can be reached at [email protected].

Take your time and research the companies, there are forums for hosts now and Google will help you find these.

Be wary of ones that offer the world for a cheap price you can bet the service is bad.
